Underworld Productions was created in 2004 to produce operas that are outside the box of mainstream repertoire, including premieres of new works, under-represented works of past centuries, and updated stagings. We de-mystify opera so that all may enjoy it by creating stylish, inclusive, and accessible performances with high musical and dramatic standards. UP provides operatic training and performance opportunities to singers working in opera as well as those working in other genres.

Underworld Productions premiered JULIA, an operatic monodrama for soprano and chamber ensemble by Henry Papale with text by Julia Ward Howe, in September 2007. UP annually presents our original piece, A Victorian Christmas Carol, based on the Charles Dickens classic with authentic songs from his era and an original script and lyrics by the UP team. Our presentations of standard repertory are anything but standard fare! We set our abridged versions of Mozart's Marriage of Figaro in a Manhattan law firm, Don Giovanni in a psychiatric ward, and Magic Flute in a 1960s cult headquarters. We provide performing editions of these works to interested groups at modest rental fees.

Underworld Productions seeks to engender a wider audience for opera by ensuring maximum participation, including those of diverse backgrounds and ages. We take music to historically underserved populations with outreach projects such as a benefit for a Manhattan Valley soup kitchen and variety programs of classical and pop selections at nursing homes and assisted living facilities. UP sends our teaching artists into New York City schools to pass on to the next generation the discipline and joy of music.
Underworld Productions has received grants from The City of New York Department of Youth and Community Development; Meet The Composer's MetLife Creative Connections program; Puffin Foundation; Joyce Dutka Arts Foundation; and Venable Foundation; and matching grants from The New York Times and Kingdon Capital.
